Illumination is sometimes used with reference to the ministry of the Holy Spirit in knowing and understanding God’s word. This word and the function it represents is represented by other words used in Scripture such as “opened the Scriptures” (Luke 24.32), “opened their understanding” (Luke 24.45), and “opened her heart” (Acts 16.14). The word of God is the product of the Holy Spirit, and it is light. Illumination comes by comparing and organizing the word of God and often seeing its connection with Christ, and therefore resulting in things like understanding, agreement (it rings true), and conviction and assurance (faith).
