1) Grace speaks of something
unmerited and unearned, a gift.
Romans 11.5-6: “5 Even
so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of
grace. 6
And if by grace, then [it] [is] no longer of works; otherwise grace is
no longer grace. But if [it] [is] of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise
work is no longer work.”
This passage speaks of how
there are some Jews, now, a remnant, that exist in the people and purpose of
God, and their place is according to the “election of grace.” A “remnant” speaks of preservation of a part
of the whole.
This means their place is not
according to the election of works.
Election speaks of choosing.
They are chosen according to grace and not works. According to the grace principle, unmerited,
not according to the works principle.
This grace is conditional,
because it is through faith in Christ for salvation. But faith is not works because works are the
ability to keep God’s laws, but faith believes the promise of God of salvation
through Christ. A remnant of Jews
believed, and therefore became a part of the people of God according to the
election/ choosing of grace.
2) Grace speaks of the act/ gift of Christ,
which is the basis of salvation.
2 Cor 8.9: “For you know the
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes
He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”
Rom 5.15-16: 15 But
the free gift [is] not like the offense. For if by the one man's offense many
died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man,
Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16 And the gift [is] not like [that] [which]
[came] through the one who sinned. For the judgment [which] [came] from one
[offense] [resulted] in condemnation, but the free gift [which] [came] from
many offenses [resulted] in justification.
The word “gift” is the grace
/ act of Christ.
Saved by grace could speak of
the unmerited fact of salvation, or it could be the work of Christ.
