James 1.5
speaks of lacking wisdom in the context of various trials.
Wisdom is “knowledge
of what is proper or reasonable: good sense or judgment.”
Wisdom is knowing
how to respond and act towards those trials that face us as believers.
Zane Hodges
says “in this context, James is speaking of that particular wisdom we need in
order to cope with various trials we experience...”
“Various
trials” is kind of broad, though persecution may be primary, the word “various”
may include any conflict or difficulty that may put us to the test—so to speak.
We need
wisdom on how to respond as individuals and as an assembly of believers.
Though I
believe Scripture tells us how to respond to difficulties and conflicts generally, we may still not be sure what to do in a
particular situation.
James says
we are to ask God. That means pray about
it. Ask others to pray for you. Also, it is good to seek counsel from other
believers—doesn’t God work this way?
Persecution,
conflict, difficulties, come in many different ways. How should I respond?
We should
settle in our minds that there will be conflict and tribulation, and see this
as a means of refining faith in dependence on God to provide wisdom on
how to respond and patience and endurance, and if anything, having conduct becoming to the glory of God.
